My favourite subjects tend to be landscapes and abandoned buildings. Places we have left behind are interesting because of the random nature of how they decay, because of the interesting light that I find within them and because they let my photos tell stories of the lives that were once lived there.

Much as a stage actor will over-dramatize to project an emotion out to the audience, I tend to over-state elements of shadow and light in my photos in order to reach out to my viewer.  Often I will use a B&W conversion to strengthen the statement made by line and texture in a photo, and then sparingly add back some colour with a digital over-painting to heighten the dramatic impact.

Recently I have experimented with context – changing, abstracting or totally removing the context for a subject in order to show it in a new way. I am also experimenting with manual transfer and printing, which allows me to produce unique one-off prints on unorthodox materials.  A wide range of influences have inspired me and found their way into my style: from Caravaggio’s muted palette and dramatic lighting through to the use of light and shadow in film-noire cinematography.

Press
Murray Whyte of the Toronto Star reviewed my Contact show May 25 2009:
In his exhibition Touching Rust, Craig Bell explores well-worn territory with his conjuring of the sublime from the relics of our industrial near-past. Familiarity, in this case, makes the eye grow fonder; his take is like a warm — if somewhat frayed — favourite visual blanket. At Terroni, 57a Adelaide Street West, until May 29.
